Irwin is the fourth recipient of the West Michigan Woman Legacy of Brilliance Award, an honor created as part of the annual Brilliance Awards, which recognizes a woman who for years has given of herself, personally and professionally, to better the lives of those around her. We caught up with Irwin to get her perspective on her work and what advice she has for others.
When reflecting back on your work, what do you see and feel?
I see and feel the work of personal motivation and chasing a dream. As a second career, I chased the carrot, I paid the dues and I found ways to be in the room! I have had a platform to share community stories that inspire, entertain, and inform, and know that making magic happens by being personally driven makes me complete! And, the surrounding of supportive peeps!
What are some of your proudest moments?
One always feels celebrated when being recognized by their peers. Early in my career, I was honored with five consecutive AWRT Gracie Allen Awards, which meant five trips to New York City to accept. On the avocation side, there’s no greater feeling than crossing the finish line of a marathon or at the end of a World Team USA Triathlon. Hard work pays off.
What's your advice to other women hoping to have as respected and impactful a career as yourself?
Find that true passion that keeps you up at night and chase it. Dream big and think on what might make the dream in your form come true. Keep authenticity high, show up, occasionally go over and beyond, and practice the golden rule!
What are you looking forward to tackling next?
I often say: #moretodo. Coming upon celebrating 25 years this year, perhaps more formal mentoring, for sure more racing, and maybe that memoir!
