The smell of popcorn, the rush to get a good spot, throwing blankets and pillows in a truck bed, tuning the radio to the required station … the nostalgia of an outdoor or drive-in movie in the summertime is strong. And if you’re seeking that kind of experience in West Michigan this coming season, keep reading. We’ve got a list of spots who are offering just that.
The Getty Drive-In
A classic movie viewing experience, the outdoor drive-in theater at The Getty in Muskegon is a must if you’re craving the nostalgic vibes of the summers of yesteryear. Choose from the double feature movies playing on four different giant screens while enjoying a variety of concessions, which can be ordered online and delivered right to your vehicle.
LST 393’s 2026 Friday Night "Movies On Deck"
Also in Muskegon, this setting for taking in a flick from the silver screen is unlike any other. Movies are shown on the USS LST 393’s huge screen on the top deck starting right after sunset, around 10 p.m. These events are free, though donations are accepted. Don’t forget to bring your own chair! And don’t worry, snacks, popcorn, and pop are available for purchase to accompany the experience.
Sunset Cinema at Studio Park
While this year’s movie schedule hasn’t been released just yet as of the writing on this article, the Sunset Cinema movies shown in the piazza at Celebration Cinema Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids is a great way to be among the hustle and bustle of downtown while enjoying an open-air flick. So, bring a low-rise lawn chair, arrive early, and enjoy!
EGR Movies in the Park
At John Collins Park on the shores of Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids, Movies in the Park offers a variety of free, family-friendly movies throughout the summer. Bring your pooch (on a leash, of course), family, and snag a good spot to enjoy a movie lakeside on their giant inflatable screen at dusk.
Byron Center Movies in the Park
This free summer movie series for the Byron Center and surrounding communities is ideal for families looking for outdoor fun. Whether you choose to sit on a big blanket or bring a comfy lawn chair, you’re sure to have a good night out. Even better? Each movie has multiple food trucks onsite, making it a whole dinner-and-a-movie night out for the family.
Kalamazoo Parks Summer Cinema
Presented in various Kalamazoo parks, this Summer Cinema series shows movies on a large LED video board, complete with pre-movie activities. Check back on the Kalamazoo Parks website for updated details regarding the movies for this summer.
