Did you know? Warmer weather means it’s kitten season here in West Michigan, with the Humane Society of West Michigan expecting to intake over 700 kittens in the coming months.
When warmer weather comes, animal shelters see an increase in stray cats breeding and litters of homeless kittens coming to the shelter multiple times a day. Unfortunately, a large majority of these kittens come in with illness, malnourishment, and need specialized around-the-clock care.

To save as many kittens as possible, Humane Society of West Michigan has launched their “Kitten Caboodles” program, which allows individuals to support critical kitten supplies. These supplies include milk replacements, kitten food, heating discs, toys that mimic the sound of a mother cat’s heartbeat, and other medical care items. Plus, supporters who donate to this program have an opportunity to name a rescue kitten!
Humane Society of West Michigan is asking the community to help save kittens and support the Kitten Caboodle program by donating here.

In addition to supporting the Kitten Caboodle program, Humane Society of West Michigan wants to remind the community of the following steps to help mitigate the critical effects of kitten season:
-
Spay and neuter your pets to avoid unexpected surprises.
-
If you find a kitten in the wild, do not immediately bring it to a shelter. Check if the kitten is clean, warm to the touch, and has a plump belly. This means it is well cared for by its mother and does not need to be brought in.
-
If there is no sign of mom and the kittens appear thin and lethargic, bring them in.
