The arena lights dimmed as about 1,800 middle school girls settled into their seats, notebooks open, eyes wide. On the volleyball court, the Grand Rapids Rise players and head coach Cathy George took turns sharing stories and insights. Topics ranged from managing social media and mental health to overcoming perfectionism, building self-confidence, embracing individuality, and turning setbacks into opportunities for growth.
The first-ever Game Changers event on March 18, 2025, transformed Van Andel Arena into a classroom where life lessons that aren’t talked about enough were front and center, designed to empower and inspire this generation of young women. These lessons came directly from professional athletes who face the same doubts, pressures, and challenges as everyone else, delivering the message that anyone can face these challenges and no one has to do it alone.

The phoenix on the Rise logo feels alive in moments like this. The players’ willingness to be open and vulnerable about personal struggles mirrors the same resilience and focus they bring to the court, a powerful reminder that every obstacle can be overcome.
On match day, that mindset flourishes. Every serve, spike, and monster block reflects countless hours of practice and precision. The arena, filled with more than 4,000 fans on average, is electric, each moment amplified by the crowd’s energy and enthusiasm. Leadership, collaboration, and heart are on full display.

As the Rise prepare to take flight in their third season of the newly rebranded Major League Volleyball, anticipation is building for the season opener on January 9 against the defending MLV champion Orlando Valkyries, followed by the home opener on January 14 against the Columbus Fury.
Behind the scenes, the Rise remain deeply connected to the West Michigan community. Another Game Changers event is already set for December 15, continuing the mission to inspire and equip girls with tools for confidence and leadership. Behind Coach George’s example, the team also stays active year-round through school visits, youth clinics, and other community partnerships. One recent highlight in April 2025 included a sitting volleyball clinic with the Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports program, where the team shared the court with adaptive athletes to celebrate inclusivity and the unifying power of sport.

In every interaction, whether through a word of encouragement, a guiding hand, or a shared laugh, the team fosters moments that extend far beyond the court. Rising above is not just about winning or personal success; it’s also about lifting others along the way.
Together, we Rise.
